SPEKTAKEL, LUSTPRINZIP ODER DAS KARNEVALESKE? –
Ein Ausstellungsprojekt in 3 Kapiteln, 1. Kapitel
Das Karnevaleske ist eine Weise, die Welt umzustülpen und damit die Ordnung und alle aus ihr erwachsenen Formen der Furcht, Ehrfurcht, Pietät und Etikette ausser Kraft zu setzten. (Bachtin)
Das Karnevaleske meint eine Verkehrung der Welt und ein Ausserkraftsetzen von Konventionen und gesellschaftlichen Codes. Das Karnevaleske ist nach Bachtin „ein Schauspiel ohne Rampe,“ ein Moment der Enthierarchisierung, die sich der repressiven, ernsten Kultur utopisch und befreiend gegenüber verhält.
Das Karnevaleske lässt sich einerseits als eine widerständige Praxis verstehen - andererseits bedient es kapitalistische Verwertungsinteressen durch die Ökonomisierung, Reglementierung und Institutionalisierung gesellschaftlicher Lustbegehren. Die Dichotomie von dem Selbstermächtigungspotential popkultureller Phänomene und den Profit orientierten Strategien der Kultur- und Lifestyle-Industrie wirft die Frage auf, inwiefern unsere Gesellschaft sowohl ein konsumierendes Prinzip als auch ein widerständiges Prinzip des Karnevalesken verfolgt. Vermutlich kopieren und adaptieren diese Konzepte voneinander.
Das Karnevaleske äussert sich oft als Tabuverletzung oder temporäre Tabuüberschreitung. Im Zusammenhang mit institutionalisierten Ausprägungen könnte man von einer rituellen widerständigen Praxis sprechen, in welcher temporär Ordnungsparameter umgedreht werden – dies geschieht aber nach einer Regel. Interessant sind in diesem Zusammenhang die Spektakelisierung des Politischen insbesondere in den Medien. Eine weitere wichtige Frage ist, welche Rolle die ästhetische Praxis hierbei spielt, da sie selbst von diesem Prinzip betroffen ist.
Die künstlerische Praxis interessiert karnevaleske Strategien, wie sie etwa die Medien und Kommunikationsguerilla verwenden: Einerseits untersucht und kommentiert sie diese und andererseits findet sie in ihnen häufig eine Sprache, um auf brisante gesellschaftliche Themen aufmerksam zu machen und sie zur Diskussion zu stellen. In diesem Ausstellungsprojekt soll es einerseits darum gehen, die Parameter des Karnevalesken und die damit zusammenhängenden Tabumechanismen zu untersuchen und andererseits künstlerische Praktiken vorzustellen, die sich inhaltlich und performativ mit dem Thema beschäftigen.

Die Shedhalle Zeitung wird halbjährlich erscheinen. Sie wird einerseits die aktuellen Projekte dokumentieren und andererseits durch Essays den Blickwinkel auf die jeweiligen Schwerpunktthemen erweitern. Des Weiteren funktioniert sie auch als kuratierte Plattform, wie etwa in der „HOSTED BY“ Sektion, in dieser Ausgabe: Copenhagen Free University „HOSTED BY“ Appendiks (Kopenhagen). Zusätzlich ermöglicht der Veranstaltungskalender einen Überblick über das kommende Programm in der Shedhalle.

Eine Filmreihe, die wir bereits mit der Langen Nacht der Museen begonnen haben, setzten wir im folgenden jeweils am 1. Donnerstag des Monats um 20.00 Uhr in der Shedhalle fort. Die monatlich stattfindende Filmreihe Untersucht das Verhältnis fiktionaler und dokumentarischer Strategien in der künstlerischen Filmproduktion.

SPECTACLE, PLEASURE PRINCIPLE, OR THE CARNIVALESQUE? –
An exhibition project in 3 chapters, Chapter 1:
The carnivalesque is a way of turning the world upside down, breaking down the established order and doing away with all of the forms of fear, respect, piety and etiquette that have emerged from it. (Bachtin)
The carnivalesque involves a reversal of the world and the negation of conventions and societal codes. Bachtin describes the carnivalesque as a “play without a stage”, a moment in which hierarchies are suspended and repressive, earnest culture is confronted by a liberating vision of utopia.
The carnivalesque can be understood as a form of practical resistance – yet it also serves the interests of capitalist profit-seeking in that it regulates and institutionalizes the pursuit of pleasure in society in order to exploit its economic potential. The dichotomy of the self-empowering potential of the phenomena of pop culture and the profit-oriented strategies of the culture and lifestyle industry raises the question of the extent to which our society is motivated by the principle of consumption as well as the principle of resistance embodied by the carnivalesque. Presumably, these two concepts copy and adapt certain aspects from one another.
The carnivalesque is often manifested as a violation of taboos or a kind of temporary transgression. In its institutionalised forms, one might regard it as ritualised exercise of resistance in which parameters of order are temporarily reversed – but always in accordance to a rule. Particularly interesting in this context is the spectacularisation of politics, especially in the media. Another important question relates to the role of aesthetic practice in this process, as it is affected by this same principle.
Art is concerned with strategies of the carnivalesque of the kind pursued by the media and communication guerrillas. On the one hand, it investigates and comments on them; yet it also often discovers a language in them with which to call attention to critical social themes and present them for discussion.
This exhibition project will be devoted to an investigation of the parameters of the carnivalesque and related taboo mechanisms but will also focus on artistic practices that are concerned in both a substantive and a performative sense with the subject.

A SYMPOSIUM followed by a discussion about strategies of the carnivalesque and practical resistance in media and public space will take place at the Shedhalle on Saturday, the 11th of December between 15:00 and 19:00. Further information will be provided at a later date.

First issue of the SHEDHALLE NEWSLETTER:
The Shedhalle Newspaper will be issued semi-annually. It will document current projects and provide a broader perspective on individual focal themes through essays. The newspaper will also serve as a curated platform, as in the “hosted by” section: in this issue Copenhagen Free University is hosted by Appendiks (Copenhagen). In addition, the event calendar also provides an overview of the Shedhalle programme schedule.

The Shedhalle film series, which has already begun with our presentation at the long nights of the museums, will be continued, with presentations in the Shedhalle at 20:00 on the first Thursday of each month. The series of monthly film presentations will focus on the relationship between fictional and documentary strategies in artistic film production.
