Kaum hat man sich versehen, schon zettelt die Bagage eine weitere Stampede über den Neoismus an. Insbesondere der Gralshüter dessen was als Neoismus zu bezeichnen ist, Florian Cramer, in der Rohrpost-Mailingliste:

Ich bin heute der Ansicht, daß es nicht einen Neoismus gibt,
sondern viele Neoismen. Dies ist die logische und sinnvolle Konsequenz daraus, daß Neoismus mit Paradoxien und multiplen Identitäten operiert und daher als solcher nicht auf bloß einen Neoismus reduzierbar sein sollte.

Für den "eigentlichen" Neoismus, den von Istvan Kantor Anfang der 80er Jahre in Montreal begründeten, scheint sich niemand zu interessieren, obwohl er ja erst letzte Woche live und mit Originalprotagonisten (Istvan, Gordon W., Niels Lomholt, Georg Ladanyi) in Berlin beim "Dept Festival" zu erleben war.

Daneben gibt es eine Reihe von postsituationistischen Subkultur-Gruppen der 90er Jahre, den man i.d.R. erst nachträglich das Label "Neoismus" verpaßt hat, weil kein griffigerer Name zur Hand war.

Und dann gibt es Neoismen, die als private Fiktionen und Obsessionen von Historikern und Theoretikern betrieben werden. Dazu zähle ich neben dem Neoismus von Stewart Home auch jenen Oliver Marcharts. Es verhält sich hier mit dem Neoismus ähnlich wie mit der Kabbala. Da die Kabbala selbst spekulativ ist, wird jeder ihrer Theoretiker und Historiker nolens volens selbst zum Kabbalisten (so also auch Gelehrte wie Gershom Scholem
und Moshe Idel, oder christliche Kabbala-Interpreten wie Pico della
Mirandola, Johannes Reuchlin, Knorr von Rosenroth und Athanasius
Kircher).

- Dies, und darin implizit das unendliche Fortschreiben des Phantoms Neoismus bis heute, widerlegt aber die These von Neoismus als "letzte[r] der Avantgarden".

Gegenvorschlag: Wenn es eine vorerst letzte Kunst-Avantgarde gegeben hat, dann die der "Net.art", d.h. jener Netzkünstler-Gruppe der 90er Jahre, die sich Net art mit "." dazwischen nannte. Im Gegensatz zum Neoismus gab es richtige, und sogar z.T. gute und formal innovative Kunst in der Net.art, es gab Manifeste und eine Avantgarden-typische Koppelung von Kunst- und Politkultur-Programmen, hier vor allem im Anspruch einer antikorporatistischen "Netzkultur". Neben dem
dot.com-Crash gab es auch einen Net.art-Crash in dem Sinne, daß sich die Netzkunst eben nicht als Zentrum und Motor einer unabhängigen Netzkultur bewies, sondern diese Netzkultur hauptsächlich von der Freien Software-Bewegung und ihren technischen Erfindungen wie Weblogs und Wikis geprägt wurde.

Interessant ist nun, daß Oliver zwar auch die Net.art als Zeitzeuge und Begleiter aus erster Hand kennt, weitaus besser sogar als den Neoismus [sofern letzterer sich sozial und nicht in Sekundärliteratur
manifestierte], aber Neoismus als Studienobjekt einer "letzten
Avantgarde" vorzieht. Weil es leichter ist, dem Widersprüchlichem seine Bedeutung nachträglich zu definieren, ohne daß jemand zu widersprechen wagt?

Achtung, wer behauptet, "über" Neoismus zu sprechen, ist der
gefährlichste Neoist von allen!

Dabei weiss doch inzwischen jeder, dass der Streit über den Neoismus der Neoismus ist. Aber dass er nun mit der net.art kommt, dass ist dann schon ein bisschen tragisch. Good bye Neoismus? Natürlich nicht, aber lehnen wir uns zurück und schauen wir weiter amüsiert zu ...

Neoismus gilt als die bekannteste unbekannte Avantgarde-Bewegung mit großem Einfluss in der Netzkunstszene. Laut einer Definition ist der Neoismus "ein Präfix und ein Suffix ohne Wortstamm". Er ist eine Bewegung, die die Illusion einer Bewegung namens Neoismus erzeugt, eine Bewegung, die von ihren Gegnern, den Anti-Neoisten erfunden wurde. Außerdem ist er eine Methode zur Herstellung von Kunstgeschichte.

Der Neoismus, angeblich in den späten 70ern als No Ism! in Portland aus der Mail Art-Szene hervorgegangen, hat bis heute großen Einfluss in der Netzkunstszene.

Der Neoismus ist die letzte historische Avantgardebewegung. Nicht unbedingt zeitlich, sondern weil er nichts anderes als sich selbst zum Inhalt hat: also die Avantgarde als Avantgarde selbst. Der Neoismus, so eine der Definitionen, ist ein Präfix und ein Suffix ohne etwas dazwischen und eine Methode zur Herstellung von Kunstgeschichte.

Und wenn jede Geschichte eine Manipulation ist, wie Neoisten behaupten, gibt es so viele Geschichten des Neoismus wie es deren Manipulationen gibt. Fälschung, Plagiarismus, multiple Identitäten, Selbstsubversion und -Manipulation werden folglich zu zentralen neoistischen Strategien.
